Tuesday, September 24th was a wonderful day honoring National Voter Registration Day! We kicked off with our Annual Welcome Back Breakfast with First Selectman Kevin Moynihan’s State of the Town Address, followed by two sessions of voter registration at the high school and library. The next election is November 5th. Make sure you – and everyone you know – are registered to vote It’s our civic duty – a right, and a privilege many in the world do not have the opportunity to exercise. National Voter Registration Day is on Tuesday, September 24th, and the League of Women Voters of New Canaan will be registering voters in the Cafeteria at New Canaan High School from 10:45 AM -12:30 PM, and also at the New Canaan Library from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM. **We are in need of two volunteers for each registration. Kindly RSVP here. Are you a registered Republican or Democrat? If so, mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 16, when each party will caucus to select candidates who will go on to run for elective office. This is important! Election day is Tuesday, November 5, but the caucuses determine which Republicans and Democrats will be nominated to stand for election. The caucuses will endorse candidates for the following elective offices: First Selectman, one seat, two-year term Selectman, one seat, two-year term Town Clerk, one seat, two-year term Town Treasurer, one seat, two-year term Board of Education, three seats, four-year term Board of Assessment Appeals, two seats, two-year term Town Council, four seats, four-year term All registered Republicans and Democrats are encouraged to participate! You must be registered as a Republican to vote in the Republican Caucus, or as a Democrat to vote in the Democratic Caucus. The Republican Caucus will be held at the New Canaan High School Main Gym on Tuesday, July 16th. Doors open at 6:15PM, Caucus starts at 6:30PM, and Voting is open 7PM-9PM. The deadline to submit petitions to be a candidate has passed. Republicans will be hosting a Candidate Forum/Debate for the contested BOE seats in July. For more information on the Republican Candidates, Candidate Forum, Voting at the Republican Caucus, or the New Canaan Republican Town Committee (RTC), visit the New Canaan RTC website: newcanaanrepublicans.org. The Democratic Caucus will be held at Town Hall on July 16h at 7:30 PM. Registered Democrats interested in serving do not need to have a petition signed. Contact the nominating committee of the Democratic Town Committee (DTC) to be included on the Democratic slate. Democrats also allow nominations from the floor of the caucus. Wednesday, April 10, 2019 Working with New Canaan Registrar of Voters Joan McLaughlin (R), the New Canaan League of Women Voters will once again help register New Canaan High School students to vote. This will take place on Wednesday, April 10th, during all three lunch periods from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. On April 10th, the students will be able to register online using laptops that will be made available at the registration site, or they can fill in paper registration cards, which will also be provided. Students should be prepared to show valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Make sure they come prepared! *PLEASE NOTE: Local League of Women Voters Candidate Forums have been experiencing record attendance this year. With that in mind, we want to remind attendees to get to Town Hall early to secure a seat. Due to space limitations, attendance will be limited to 200. We invite you to submit your questions online in advance of the forum via email. The event will be televised and streamed live on Channel 79 as well as rebroadcasted over the next 2 weeks at various times during the day. Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018 With the New Canaan Registrars of Voters, Joan McLaughlin (R), George Cody (D), and John Amarilios, the New Canaan League of Women Voters will once again help register New Canaan High School students to vote during all three lunch periods from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students should be prepared to show valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Those who are currently 17 years old but turning 18 years old by Election Day (November 6, 2018), will be eligible to vote in the Connecticut Primary on August 14, 2018 if they register with either the Democratic or Republican party. As always, those who choose to register as “Undecided” are not entitled to vote in a Primary. |
