LWVNC Policy on Political Activity at Open Meetings
The League of Women Voters of New Canaan is a non-partisan, political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. We welcome individuals who are candidates for office at all open League events as individuals, but not in their role as candidates, and we ask that they respect our non-partisan status. They may not campaign, including but not limited to the following: wearing campaign identification, introducing themselves as candidates, bringing campaign materials, or being accompanied by campaign staff or volunteers unless those individuals attend as individuals and abide by the same restrictions. Current office holders should exercise discretion as to whether their speeches or comments constitute citizen education or campaigning.
The only exceptions to this policy are panel events to educate the public on partisan positions, such as a Candidates' Forum, Candidates’ Night, Candidates’ Breakfast, etc.
Guidance for LWVNC Members:
Candidates attending League events should be briefed on our policies in advance if possible.
Candidates for office should not be seated at the League President’s table at breakfast or luncheon events.
Speakers should not recognize candidates from the podium.
Candidates should not pay any event fees out of campaign accounts.
