Voting in New Canaan
To register to vote in New Canaan you must be at least 17 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a bona
fide resident of the town. However, you cannot vote until you are 18. You may register to vote in person
at the Voter Registrars' Office in Town Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or by mail. Mail-in registration forms
are available from the Town Clerk, Registrars of Voters, or at the library. You must be registered 14 days before
a regular election or by noon (in person) the day before the primary. Only those enrolled in
a party can vote
in its primary. There is a three-month waiting period if you have changed parties.
Voters in New
Canaan's election districts 1 and 2 vote at the New Canaan High School. Voters residing in district 3 vote at Saxe
Middle School. Polls are open from 6:00 a.m.
to 8:00 p.m. in Connecticut for general elections.
To obtain an absentee ballot the voter must apply in person or by mail to the Town Clerk on a request form furnished
by the Clerk beginning 19 days before a primary or 30 days before a regular election. The ballot may
be completed and returned to the Clerk at the same time, or returned by mail,
in time to reach the Town Clerk before
the close of regular office hours, 4:30 p.m., on the day of the election. No absentee ballot can be presented in person
at the polls.
